Blantyre, October 10, 2024 – Rwanda continues its dominant performance in the T20I series against Malawi, securing a comprehensive 9-wicket victory in the second match at the TCA Oval. Powered by a stellar batting display from Oscar Manishimwe and disciplined bowling from the Rwandan attack, the visitors now lead the five-match series 2-0.
Malawi’s Batting Woes Continue
After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Malawi’s top order once again struggled to build partnerships. Captain Donnex Kansonkho provided a quick start with a blistering 10 off 6 balls, including two boundaries, but he was dismissed early by Ignace Ntirenganya, caught by Daniel Gumyusenge.
The middle order showed some promise, with Gift Kansonkho anchoring the innings with a well-fought 36 off 36 balls, including four boundaries and one six. However, he found little support from his teammates. Sami Sohail (7 off 7), Aaftab Limdawala (9 off 8), and Phillip Zuze (3 off 10) failed to capitalize on starts, and the wickets tumbled at regular intervals.
The Rwandan bowling attack, led by Emile Rukiriza and Yves Cyusa, was clinical. Rukiriza once again proved to be Malawi’s nemesis, claiming 3 wickets for 19 runs, while Cyusa chipped in with 2 for 15. Malawi was bowled out for a modest 109 in 18.3 overs, with only a few batsmen reaching double digits.
Rwanda’s Comfortable Chase
Chasing a target of 110, Rwanda wasted no time in getting off the mark. Oscar Manishimwe played a match-winning knock, remaining unbeaten on 46 off 43 balls. His innings was laced with six boundaries and one maximum, ensuring Rwanda’s chase was steady and controlled.
Manishimwe found a reliable partner in Didier Ndikubwimana, who scored a quickfire 26 off 20 balls, including four boundaries and a six. Although Ndikubwimana fell in the 6th over, Rwanda was already in a comfortable position at 49/1. Wilson Niyitanga then joined Manishimwe, contributing 24 not out off 27 balls to steer Rwanda home with ease.
The Malawian bowlers struggled to create any pressure. Aaftab Limdawala was the only bowler to pick up a wicket, finishing with figures of 1/20 in his 4 overs. The rest of the attack, including Daniel Jakiel and Suhail Vayani, was largely ineffective as Rwanda wrapped up the chase in just 15 overs, finishing at 113/1.
Player of the Match: Oscar Manishimwe
Oscar Manishimwe was awarded Player of the Match for his unbeaten 46, which anchored Rwanda’s chase and led them to a convincing 9-wicket win.
Rwanda in the Driver’s Seat
With a 2-0 lead in the series, Rwanda has showcased its all-around strength and consistency. Their bowlers have been relentless, while the batting unit, led by Manishimwe, has shown great composure in both matches. Malawi will need to bounce back quickly if they hope to remain competitive in the series.
The third T20I will be a crucial match for Malawi as they look to avoid a series defeat, while Rwanda will aim to continue their winning momentum and seal the series.
